Deadline: December 1, 2026
The ECREA Communication & Democracy section is preparing a proposal to Routledge for a Handbook of Media, Communication and Democracy in Europe. The handbook will chart the current state of European democracy as it relates to media and communication. Each chapter will give an overview of one area: charting the major literature, providing historical context, mapping current scholarship and debates, and offering a critical outlook.
We invite contributions in six areas:
- Theories, concepts and methods for studying media and democracy
- Media power, information ecosystems and representation
- Political communication and democratic threats
- Civil society, social movements and activism
- Participatory media cultures
- Technology, governance and the politics of AI
We especially welcome comparative and transnational perspectives, attention to the diversity of European political cultures, and contributions that center inclusion, inequality and marginalized voices. Geographical breadth and author diversity are central to the project.
