TEMPORARY WORKING GROUP

MEDIA LITERACIES and communication competencies

The newly established Temporary Working Group (TWG) Media Literacies and Communication Competencies (MLCC) seeks to gather and advance research with competence- and literacy-based approaches to the field of media and communication.

The TWG Media Literacy and Communication Competencies (MLCC) aims to provide a platform for European researchers, teacher-researchers and educators interested in advancing the theoretical, empirical and practical understanding of media education for citizens, media professionals, media and communication students, and various other professional practitioners, which might for instance include youth workers and government officials. The TWG approaches literacies and competencies from diverse perspectives, and welcomes research that engages with formal and informal learning in both institutionalized and non-institutionalized environments, involving higher education, secondary education, adult education, and professional education. Therefore, the TWG’s scope includes media literacy (ML), media and information literacy (MIL), digital literacy (DL), information literacy (IL) and further research that refers to media/communication within educational settings. Moreover, TWG MLCC goes beyond disciplinary barriers such as journalism, advertising, public relations or audiovisual communication, serving as a context for dealing with needed literacies for a convergent media environment. The TWG MLCC encourages scholars to discuss the competencies required for a convergent media environment, and welcomes research focused on comprehending labor market demands as well as bridging the gap between the professional and academic sectors.
