The main scope of this one day meeting is to present a showcase of current policy research, and to define research priorities, policy groups and explore further steps for the section. The workshop is open to all, but you will need to register your interest as soon as possible and before February 15.
We are pleased to announce the creation of Communication Law and Policy a new section of ECREA.
The aim of the section is twofold:
First its goal is to provide a forum for academic debate and research collaboration on the broadly defined area of communication law and policy, including questions of media, information and culture policy. Academic and research focused exchanges are expected to take place both in a virtual environment and through the conferences of ECREA or other international and European gatherings.
Second, the aim for the creation of the section is to provide an informed, critical policy analysis and recommendation, to collaborate with policymakers and NGOs and civil society and provide an opinion to most important themes, while also draw attention to others.
For both goals we aim to pursue electronic and print publishing wherever possible. Moreover, the section sees itself as an active network of researchers and for that reason it aims to facilitate the possibility for transnational interdisciplinary and comparative projects. The focus of research is predominantly European, therefore colleagues based outside Europe but with European interests are welcome. However, we acknowledge that EU and European policy is affected by and has an impact on international and global policy regimes and development. Thus to the extent that the study of such developments is relevant to the study of EU and broadly European policy, we consider them as part of the section’s remit.
Some of the topics relevant for the section include:
Audiovisual policy, press policy, radio, censorship, ownership control and competition law, information policy, freedom to information, diversity and cultural expression, pornography & hate speech, protection of journalistic sources, indirect policies and policy regimes, the role of institutions and/or civil society/public in policy, the policy process; the role of rhetoric/ideology/discourses in policy making and implementation; ICTs and sustainable development; women/gender and policy; social cohesion and culture policy; the impact of EU policy for national policies, etc. This is an indicative list which will be formed and shaped by our members.
The first meeting of the section will take place on March 9 at Leeds University. The main scope of this one day meeting is to present a showcase of current policy research, and to define research priorities, policy groups and explore further steps for the section. The workshop is open to all, but you will need to register your interest at communicationLP@gmail.com as soon as possible and before February 15.
Once details have been finalized about this one day meeting, there will be an announcement. However in the meantime, if you are interested in participating with a short presentation of your current research and/or attend this first section shaping meeting, please make sure you email me at the address above as soon as you can, with a tentative title. Unfortunately we have limited spaces so, your early registration of interest will be appreciated. We are currently in the process of applying for funding so that we can cover the meetings expenses; if this is successful there will be no fees involved, but even if there is a necessity for fees these will be used to secure your place and subsequently cover for refreshments.
Finally, one of the issues to be explored in this meeting will be the publication of a collection of representative pieces on EU and European policy.
